Here in Crystal River, we have an incredible habitat for redfish. Redfish are very sought after on our coast because they fight very hard and they make for a great meal! In Florida, we are allowed to keep redfish from 18” to 27”. A 27” redfish gives a large piece of meat to the hungry angler or family.
Not far from Crystal River is a place called Homosassa, this area is also an incredible area to target redfish. Both places have crystal clear water to fish in, which makes hunting redfish in shallow water very exciting, and challenging at times. A lot of fly fisherman love the challenge of this, and really enjoy stalking redfish in our crystal clear flats.
Our redfish in Crystal River, Yankeetown, and Homosassa grow anywhere from 1 pound fish on up to more than 20 pounds! An average size redfish in our area is around 26”, which is a great average! These fish willingly take flies and artificial baits just as much as they do live shrimp or pinfish. Redfish has to be my favorite fish to target in Crystal River year round!
