TARPON

MEGALOPS ATLANTICUS could, perhaps be the most fun game fish that we are able to target on the Nature Coast. These fish can range anywhere from 2 pounds to over 200 pounds! Our average fish here in Homosassa is around 100 pounds. These fish are migratory fish and travel the coast when they reach the age of sexual maturity, which science has showed us that a sexually mature tarpon is around 100 pounds. We get them starting around mid April and can fish them all the way out until September and even sometimes October. Prime dates for these fish generally are from May to July. With the many different areas that we can target these fish in, it gives the angler a variety of ways to catch them. In Homosassa and Crystal River, we fish very clear water as the fish migrate across the vast shallow grass flats that area has to offer. In the areas north of there, I like to target deep holes where these fish “lay up” and roll, anxiously awaiting a fly or soft plastic. Some of these areas include Yankeetown, Cedar Key, Suwannee, and Horseshoe Beach. Homosassa has held the record for tarpon on fly since 1982, when Billy Pate caught a 182 pound tarpon on 16 pound tippet. That’s a big tarpon! Years later, Jim Holland Jr. caught a 202 pound 8 ounce tarpon on 20 pound tippet. These world class size fish swim the Homosassa flats every year, and the opportunity could arise at any point during our day of fishing! While Homosassa is my home base for tarpon season, I do absolutely run trips out of Crystal River for tarpon, and even a little further north. Tarpon season is by far my favorite season. The adrenaline rush you get just seeing those fish, let alone hooking one is incredible and there’s nothing like it! If these fish interest you as much as they do me, give me a call today and book a trip!
